Chameleon Shrimp

These little guys are one of the coolest things I’ve had in the tank, but they were just too small to be able to survive in the aquarium so I no longer keep them.

If they weren’t getting sucked into the overflow and down into the filter sock (where they usually survived until I rescued them) they were just disappearing without trace. I think the anemones probably got them, but it could just as easily have been the crabs. One survived in there for a couple of weeks and seemed to be doing well, but then one morning he was gone.

They are really unusual little creatures that seemed to just enjoy floating around in the current looking for copepods and plankton. If they grew to a bigger size they would be fantastic in a set up like I have, but they’re just too small so I no longer bring them home and just release any I catch. They’re very easy to scoop up as all you need to do is drag the net through seaweed in pools and you’ll find them very frequently, especially in the summer.

If I ever set up another, smaller tank then these are the first species I would want in there.
